The Department of Medicine and Surgery has established the following learning outcomes:
 
  • Clinically-applied technological and biological research to be able to experiment and evaluate the impact that the innovation of materials, radio-diagnostic and radio-therapeutic devices, software and molecular drugs may have in the management of health and prevention processes, diagnoses, treatment, cure and pain reduction, as well as in the field of surgical emergencies. This applies both to system efficiency and efficacy and to the patient’s objective and perceived quality of life.
  • The ability to transfer new knowledge from bio-technological research to applied biotechnology as rapidly as possible in order to develop new advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, as well as creating new diagnostic tools. The department works on both theoretical and applied biological and technological research to provide new organisation models for assistance and the creation of professional profiles that meet the requirements of medicine. Moreover, the department also participates in a network of international research teams to pursue the best possible international ranking.
 
The main objectives of the department include:
 
  • The creation of a cultural and experimental continuum ranging from basic biotechnological research to Bench-to-Bedside
  • Lifelong learning and professional updating for doctors in all the department’s sectors to prepare for technological innovations and the need to improve the outcome of research work
  •  Professional training for hospital work and health services in biomedical and nursing fields
  • Testing and evaluating local health service models for efficient primary cures
  • Protect communities in work and life environments through preventive medicine for categories at risk
  • Apply research outcomes to medical and surgical emergencies
  • Testing and evaluating (efficiency and efficacy) of integrated health services procedures based on:
o The importance of the patient and a full knowledge of the pathologies afflicting him or her to optimise health services
o Health service intensity: regular, urgent, emergency, reanimation
 
The department concentrates on the following research and didactic activities:
 
  • Techno-biological: surgical materials, endoscopy, radiology, radiotherapy and prosthetics
  • Morphological-functional: diagnostic imagery, hardware, software, nuclear medicine and endoscopy
  • Integrated clinics: trials and studies on technological applications (materials, imaging, software, radiotherapy and radio-receptive therapy, etc.) for integrated diagnostic-therapeutic procedures. Application of new biomarkers for decision-making procedures
  • Global health: the new paradigm for health and health services is rooted in the theoretical approach of the social determinants of health, based on the principles established in the Alma Ata Declaration and supported by a wide range of scientific evidence in the field of industrial, community and work health promotion.
  • Local medicine: home health services, family medicine, emergency networks, checks for mainstream pathologies, prevention of disease via inoculation, cardiovascular prevention, secondary oncological prevention, self-sufficiency loss prevention and medicine for the aged, as well as prevention of pathological addictions, prevention of inequalities and work safety medicine.
SPECIFIC PATHOLOGIES: Digestive and Nutritional, Orthopaedic, Neoplastic and Respiratory
Specifically: articular pathologies (reconstructions and prostheses); acute and chronic pain therapy; neoplastic and other pathologies affecting the liver, biliary passages, pancreas, stomach, oesophagus and colon; neoplastic adult and paediatric thorax pathologies (limited to surgery); neoplastic pathologies of the central and peripheral nervous system, mammary glands and of the urinary-genital system.
Emergencies and urgencies: traumatology, bleeding, occlusions, liver insufficiency, acute pancreatitis and gallbladder problems, neoplastic organ compressions, middle intestine infectious syndromes, shock, acute coronary syndromes, acute cardiac insufficiency, sepsis, cardiac arrhythmia, acute respiratory insufficiency, acute cerebrovascular syndromes, acute cardiac insufficiency and hydro-electric disorders.
Prevention: colon cancer, liver carcinoma and pancreas (IPMN).
COMPLEX PATHOLOGIES: Poly-traumatic and multi-organ pathologies
 
The department develops scientific protocols in collaboration with national and international networks and public and private organisations that develop materials, diagnostic tools, biomarkers, etc. that are currently being tested in research programmes by various department areas:        
  • Medical surgery: general surgery, thorax surgery, digestive diseases and digestive, pulmonary and mammary oncology (MED 18,12,21,20)
  • Orthopaedic Traumatology (MED 33,34)
  • Anaesthesia and Reanimation (MED 41)
  • Diagnostic imagery and radiotherapy (MED 36)
  • General and Applied Hygiene (MED 42)
  • Work safety medicine (MED 44)
  • Internal medicine (MED 09)
  • Nursing and rehabilitation (MED 45,48,50)
 
Our health services are based on the integrated department activities (DAI) at the Azienda Ospedaliera Sant’Andrea, which include: Diagnostic services, Emergency Services, Cardio-Thorax and Vascular Sciences, Oncological Sciences, Surgery Anaesthesia and Digestive System Diseases, Hygiene and Hospital Technique Services and Work safety medicine.
